Mildstone

Mildstone is an innovative software framework designed for acquisition and control (CODAS), specifically tailored to the needs of scientific experiments. Its primary goal is to provide an easy-to-use yet powerful platform that seamlessly integrates heterogeneous information sources - including diagnostic devices, logbooks, and general experimental documentation - into a unified system. Additionally, Mildstone offers a single interface for managing real-time control, simplifying complex operations and enhancing experimental efficiency.

Nowadays, highly sophisticated and integrated open-source systems for control and data analysis can be used by experiments and facilities of any size. Moreover, with the recent advent of advanced inference systems, it is now possible to effectively perform precise analyses on large volumes of data, enabling the identification of distant causal relationships. This also makes it possible to incorporate correlations between sensors of different types and natures—such as images, signals, documents, and more almost in real-time.

To effectively exploit these methodologies, the entire acquisition chain and data handling process of experiments must be designed to incorporate all possible sources of information. This vast collection of data should be presented with flexible marshalling mechanisms to interface seamlessly with various processing platforms.
